Options in the Colruyt folder :

There’s a wide variety of options for grocery shopping in Belgium, from the absolute budget places to the high supermarkets. They usually shop in different places for different products, for example, fruits and veggies from bio stores and meat from bigger chains. But they were wondering where we could get everything for the lowest price. So they went to seven different places and bought the same item in each store so that we could compare the final bill to see which one was the cheapest.

The list consisted of 15 products that are common not just in our pantry but probably in yours too. These were: 1 liter of milk, one baguette, one bottle of tomato sauce, 1pack of tricolor paprika, 1 table of dark chocolate, 150 grams of sliced ham, 1 kg of chicken breast, 1 kg of rice, 250 grams of butter, 250 grams of coffee, half a kg of oats, half a kg of spaghetti, half a kg of young Gouda cheese, six apples and six eggs. So we went for the cheapest option from all of these products, which most of the time meant going for the Colruyt folder store’s brand product. And as not all stores are the same, they don’t have the exact quantities.

So one of them has maybe a kilo of ground coffee. But we tried to stick to our list and keep the cheapest as our mantra. And to be true to our name, they summarized all the prices in a Colruyt folder to make an easy comparison. So without further ado, let’s go from the most expensive to the least expensive store! So this was the most expensive store.

Products in the Colruyt folder :

Five of the fifteen items were the most expensive in the Colruyt folder. Their most expensive products out of all stores were butter, chicken breast, coffee, oats, and cheese. It’s one of the biggest supermarkets in Belgium by way of space at least, and it had a good balance with all stores. The most expensive products out of all stores were the baguette, the chicken breasts, the butter, and the coffee.

It had the most products in the mid-price range. The stores’ most expensive products were milk, dark chocolate, spaghetti, and eggs. It was the first store where the cheapest products outweighed the most expensive ones. 5 were the cheapest, and only four were the most expensive. The most expensive ones were tomato sauce, sliced ham, coffee, and apples.

Generally offering more significant quantities, Colruyt would rank in the 1st place if you would look at the per kilo price for all products. And this is one of their selling points: they check the prices and promotions of all their competitors daily. Did you find a lower price elsewhere? Contact their hotline, and they will lower the price for you! The tricolor pepper and rice were the stores’ most expensive products. Although only 5 of their products were the cheapest here, only 1 made it to the most expensive range. And the most expensive product was spaghetti. Finding 9 out of the 15 products for the lowest price, we paid a little over 20 euros at Aldi, making it the cheapest grocery store in Belgium. You certainly don’t go for the shopping experience, but for the good deals. So here you go, a complete list of the most popular supermarkets in Belgium.
